CONTACT

Langerfeld Comprehensive School is a genuine comprehensive school offering all types of school leaving certificates available in Germany. We currently have 1371 students on roll, who are taught at secondary or advanced level. Our teaching staff of 110 also includes school social workers. Langerfeld is a popular training centre for students aspiring towards the teaching profession. Every year the school has around 10-12 trainee teachers with different subject areas who complete their training courses at our school.

Our school community is culturally and academically hetergenous. Approximately 45-50% of our students have an immigrant background, many of them of Turkish or Eastern European descent. At secondary level, we have six year groups each consisting of six classes with average class sizes of around 28-31.

Our catchment area covers the eastern part of Wuppertal and consists of both, inner-city as well as rural areas. Wuppertal itself is situated just south of the Ruhr area, the largest conurban industrial centre in Germany. The city is within easy access of major cities such as Cologne, Düsseldorf and Dortmund.

We are an all-day school with lessons beginning at 7.50 and finishing at 3.45 p.m. The is a lunch break of 60 min in the middle of the day. On Tuesday school finishes early to allow time for departmental, team or other meetings. Our school offers an exceptionally wide range of extra-curricular activities, especially for younger students. There are more than 50 school clubs on offer to cater for the students‘ musical, artistic, technological, sports and other interests. This is only possible with the support of parents and other local partners.

In 2013, our school started to open additional classes for students with immigrant and refugee background. They are taught mainly German and other core subjects in smaller groups before they are integrated into regular classes to offer them the opportunity to achieve a secondary leaving qualification. For almost ten years Langerfeld Comprehensive has also been teaching special needs children. As of August 2016, the school has an annual intake of 12 special needs pupils for the new year group.

The range of foreign languages taught at our school includes English, French, Latin and Russian. Whenever possible, we also offer Spanish as an extra-curricular activity. English is the first and compulsory foreign language for all students. Since 2015, our school has been granted the use of an English language assistant. This has enriched the cultural kowledge and language skills of our students and provided an additional motivation for students to study the English language. The study of a second foreign language is compulsory for all students who wish to obtain an A-level qualification.

Langerfeld Comprehensive School is involved in a multitude of projects in many different subject areas. One of the largest and most successful ones is the  cross-curricular project “Challenges“ for Year 8 students all of whom choose a challenge which they then prepare for and master at the beginning of Year 9. These challenges can relate to sports, adventure, cultural, scientific, social and other themes.
